Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were no match even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
