The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
