"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. Several famous admirers have also begged for the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often feature them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed toughness required a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will consistently be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
